Human sexual anatomy is not divided purely into male or female. There is a third, very diverse category that encompasses every combination in between male and female, known as intersex.
But despite being part of the natural range of human sex, intersex athletes are accused of breaking the rules, especially when they cross gender boundaries. South African runner Caster Semenya faced these accusations when she earned a gold medal at the 2008 World Championships in Athletics.
